Fight fans shouldn't hold their breath waiting for "El Gallo" to make his ring return anytime in the near future.
Roughly three months have elapsed since digital media personality-turned-professional prizefighter Jake Paul was brutally stopped by former Heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua, sustaining a fractured jaw in the devastating defeat at Judgement Day held at Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida on December 19, 2025 (watch highlights).
The social media heavyweight had initially targeted a late-summer or early-autumn comeback window, anticipating sufficient time for a full physical recovery. Those plans have since been derailed, however, following the disclosure that his rehabilitation was complicated by unforeseen medical complications necessitating a second surgical intervention.
"I got my second surgery recently, and the doctor said it will be four, five or six months to even be able to spar to see how the bone is healing," Paul disclosed to members of the press at the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano promotional press conference (watch here). "So that puts us maybe late this year or early next year for a fight."
The severity of the bilateral jaw fracture incurred during his sixth-round technical knockout loss to Joshua demanded emergency surgical intervention the morning after the bout, with a subsequent corrective procedure performed in February to address ongoing structural complications.
As Paul maps out the trajectory of his eventual ring return, he has simultaneously signaled a strategic pivot away from the Heavyweight division — a weight class that, in hindsight, may have placed him at a considerable physiological disadvantage against elite-level opposition. The content creator-turned-boxer is now committed to campaigning at a division more aligned with his natural frame and competitive strengths.
"Definitely will be a cruiserweight," Paul confirmed. "Joshua's punches hurt way more than people in my weight class. That's where I'm best at, for sure, and where I want to continue to climb in the rankings and make some statements."
Despite his stated commitment to the Cruiserweight ranks, Paul has previously entertained the prospect of squaring off against former UFC heavyweight titleholder Francis Ngannou — a marquee crossover matchup that could conceivably tempt him back up the weight scale for one final high-profile, high-revenue spectacle.
For the foreseeable future, however, the ring can wait — Paul's singular priority remains a full and medically sound recovery.
